In this first part of the poem the stotyteller introduces the protagonist: the epic hero Beowulf who gives the title to the work. The narrator to do this and to create the characterization attaches importance to the most important  values of his time: he starts speaking about hierarchy, because the Anglo-Saxon society was  strongly hierarchical, then  the poet continues telling us where the Beowulf lives and he speaks about the hero's reputation, to do that the storyteller  uses a climatic tension like "There was no else like him alive, in his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high-born, powerful". After that the raconteur underlines that this epic hero is the exaltation of the typical values of Anglo-Saxon culture: solidarity and generosity, Beowulf doesn't hesitate to helph the people in trouble. Subsequently we can understand that Beowulf has a strategich mentality when he explains his plain to his crew. Additionally he possesses skills in leadership, he is a good leader, with authority and the people have respect for him because he embodies the perfect Anglo-Saxon man. Finally the poet presents Beowulf like a ambitious man that nobody can stop.
