Exercice 1)

  1. Who is the poem addressed to? The poem is addressed to Death. As a matter of fact, the poet speak to death as if he is a person. Besides the term Death is repeated three times and it is always written with the capital letter.
  2. What is the introductory statement? Is it unusual? The introductory statement is "Death, be not proud,  though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so;". From my point of view it is not unusual. As a matter of fact he is a priest and he believe in the resurrection.
  3. What is the final statement? Is it truthful or absurd? The final statement is "And Death shall be no more; Death thou shalt die.". For me it is truthful, because Catholics think to conquer death when the resurrection will arrive.

Exercice 2)

a)

  • 4 - the best of human kind desire death (lines 7 / 8)
  • 6 - sleeping potions can make people sleep better than death (lines 10 / 11)
  • 2 - death falsely believes that it can kill people (lines 3 / 4)
  • 7 - christians are promised eternal life (lines 13 / 14)
  • 5 - death has repulsive companions (line 9)
  • 1 - death is a pleasurable experience, not a painful one (lines 1 / 2)
  • 2 - death has no control over events and people (lines 5 / 6)

b)

I think it is the fourth argument ("the best of human kind desire death"). As a matter of fact everyone fears death. Nobody hopes to die.

Exercice 3)

1. The rhyme scheme is of the italian sonnet. As a matter of fact it is ABBA ABBA CDDC AD.
