The title of this text is “The Chief of the Industrial Revolution” and it summarizes the essence of what Arnold Toynbee says in his text. In this case the key word is “chief” that creates in who reads an image of what he is starting to read.
First of all the author starts saying the most important information of this historic period that give to the reader the knowledge of the text in particular how the production and distribution of wealth were the first problem.
After that, from the second to the fifth paragraph, he continues with the argumentations thank of a logical speech: during these passages he writes about the causes of Industrial Revolution as economic science and socialism, the growth of population and the reasons and consequences of decline of agricultural.
Every paragraphs is characterized by examples that create a better meaning of what he is talking about: for instance in the third the argumentation are the growth of population with demographic change during the years and this is connected with the consolidation of small farms to large in the fifth.
In the sixth and seventh’s the text deals with the contradiction between the two moment of agricultural and factory: in fact the first, nevertheless the loss of people, has increased his production, while the second during some years has presented new inventions as spinning jenny and water frame.
The last paragraphs focus on the distribution of wealth, that as I just said, was one of the purposes of industrial revolution: this demonstrate a positive use of money because they are invested with intelligence.
Regarding the structure, this text has ten paragraphs: each of these is explained with a clearly exposition of the argumentation or in other words everyone has at least one example to understand better the meaning of the sentence. Every part of the text is linked with the next one through a logical way: in fact, there is a speech sense that doesn’t notice the change of argumentation. Every paragraph has a purpose: in particular in this case the text is argumentative, so they are the target to argue the author’s idea.
In conclusion the author says what he thinks as a message which he underlines the positive aspects of industrial revolution but remembers how a bad idea as competition can take wealth to people.
