Post
Modernism
We study post
modernism for 2 reasons:

  • the novel we have read (Oranges are not the
Only Fruit) deals with post modernism and because
  • it is our contemporary and we will study it for the exam.

Points to remeber

It developed during the 60ies

It does no longer believe in the concept of truth

It does no longer believe in the concept of the centre

It does no longer believe in the concept of character and author that is a self, autonomous, unique identity
While Modernism was still yearning and looking for a centre, a point of reference and all its efforts were adressed to what they called QUEST, Post Modernism questions all that and comes to the  conclusion: there is no longer a centre ( it implies that there is not a unique, stable meaning) and since there is no longer one centre but a lot of centres. It follows that meaning being itsel unstable it is always differed: because  there is a continuous slipping of meaning rignht because it is never stable.

The concept is connected to the relationship signifier/signified. Some important scholars belonging to the current of Post Modernism like J. Lyotard, Roland Barthes(semiologist) lie beyond tyhe Postmodern fictional reshaping of the world as  presented by Robyn the female character in David Lodge's Nice Work.
