Analysis of the extract from Nice Work
The extract is taken by the book "Nice Work" written by David Lodge. Right from the start of the extract the intelligent reader can understand that the novelist is going to introduce a new character. Her name is Robyn Penrose and she is a teacher at the University of Rummidge. In the introductory paragraph the novelist focuses the reader's attention on his decision to introduce a new character completely different from the previous one.
Going a step further the writer provides the intelligent reader a description of Robyn Penrose. He underlines the attitude of the character about literature. Robyn Penrose points on the fact that the rise of the novel in the eighteen century coincided with the rise of capitalism. She also believes that novelists are capitalists of the imagination.
David Lodge provides the intelligent reader a detailed description closely connected to the character's way of thinking. In the last part of the extract the novelist describes the awakening of Robyn during a January Monday. The character feels a twinge of anxiety because of the beginning of a new term.
At the end David Lodge quotes the name of Charles, another new character that he will describe later.
