1- Oranges are not the only fruit is an unusual title for a book. The title implies that there will be a contrast. The structure of the text is also unusual because it has the same structure of the Hebrew Bible, exactly it follows the structure of the octateuch: the pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) plus the books of Joshua, of Judges and of Ruth. Their function is to underline the obsession with religion of the characters of the book.

2-  Jeanette's mother is obsessed with religion and oranges. According to that Jeanette's mother has only oranges and no other fruit in her house. "Oranges are not the only fruit" is the expression of the great contrast between Jeanette and her mother, it symbolizes the escape of Jeanette from the jail created by her mother and of the final resolution to leave house and start a new life.
