Learning Paths » 5A Interacting
1) Genesis connects to the first paragraph of the novel because they are both related to the story of origins. In the Bible, Genesis deals with the creation of the world and humankind, and the rules that humans have. Likewise the first chapter of the novel refers to the early years of Jeanette and her function inside the domestic atmosphere.
2) The film begins with the scene where there are two girls in a lunapark, and some people are on the carousel. Then the youngest girl is torn away by a gypsy, who reads the hand of the girl telling her that she wouldn't marry.
3) The novelist titles the eight chapters of her novel as the Octateuch, the traditional name for the eight books of the Bible. The Chapter of Genesis is referred to the Bible or has a religious Christian context when Jeanette Winterson narrates her story, in order to underline some analogies with some points of the Bible, like the birth of Christ, Jesus on the top of the mountain, the imagery of prophet, the number seven as the seven days of the creation of the world. Other religious references dominate this chapter, Jeanette's adoption is described as an immaculate conception because Jeanette's mother received a child without having sex.
4) Jeanette's mother is considered as a hypocritical person, because even if she is one of the most devout members of Church, she doesn't take enough care of her daughter. Jeanette's mother doesn't seem to love her daughter. One example is when it turns out when Jeanette has gone deaf and she ignores and leaves her alone in hospital. Jeanette's mother is presented as somebody who has a patronising role inside of the family's atmosphere, she decides for Jeanette. In the first chapter Jeanette there are three paragraphs with the words "My mother", this suggests the importance of Jeanette's mother role and also to better understand what kind of person she is.
5) The first chapter gives a description of Jeanette's early years. During her childhood, Jeanette had the same point of view of her mother but later when she started to go to school she changes her opinion, and in this way she begins to have some discussions with her mother. She in very determined because she defends her opinion, even if it is in contrast to that of her mother.
The novel is written in the first person, but the novelist doesn't want to write an autobiography, in my opinion because Jeanette Winterson wants to make the story true, and so through the use of other texts, she writes a realistic novel.
6) The gypsy woman predicts to Jeanette that she will not marry. The gypsy presents a different point of view, totally different from the opinion of her mother.
7) In the chapter of Genesis is presented the story of the princess and the hunchback. The princess is so sensitive that she can't live well, but after the hunchback gives her something to do, the princess forgets her pain. This happens also to Jeanette, who saves herself from distress with her mother's religion.
