Analysis of the second paragraph
of the extract from Nice Work
In this part the narrator explains Robyn's ideas about the character, the self and Capitalism. Right from the start he wants to be precise and he also comments the reason why Robyn has that particular ideas, writing that her thoughts come from what she has read. So, what are Robyn's ideas?
First of all she cannot believe that a definite and complete characterisation of a character exists. This was typical in the XIX Century. During this period novels were about characters with a unique and definite identity, according to the idea of a "self made man" and to Capitalism. But Robyn does not believe any longer in this conception.
Secondly, according to her own opinion about the character, she firmly thinks that people have not only one identity , because they change during the time, in different situations etc.
But if a definite character does not exist , also a text created ab nihilo does not exist. Indeed in Robyn's opinion
every text is a product of intertextuality and there is nothing outside it. In her idea there are no origins , but
only production.
Then, she thinks that people depend on the language. On this purpose she changes the famous J.Derrida's words " you are what you eat" in her own philosophy words "you are what speaks you".
In the last few lines of the paragraph the narrator realizes that Robyn's philosophy may seem a bit inhuman, so he immediately underlines that it is not. And he proves that, telling the reader that this philosophy does not seem to affect Robyn's behaviour: in fact she seems to have all the ordinary feelings and ,in addition, she also has a natural inclination to try and make the world a better place.
