Analysis of Nice Work Extract

In this part the writer analysis Robyn's ideas about novel character and Capitalism and why she thinks in this way.
Robyn does not believe in the novel character and she links it with Capitalism development. Following Capitalism thought, the old novel character had got only a singular identity (the self): he was only good or bad, he always knew what to do and how to do it and he was always able to reach what he wanted. The self-made man and the trust into personal skills reflected Capitalism trust into progress.
With Postmodernism this view is utterly refused and openly criticized. The writer expresses Postmodernism thought trough Robyn: the character (but also a real person) has not got only a singular behaviour or a singular "self", but it changes according to the place where he is, the time and with who he is. Further more the character cannot do everything. Robyn understood people are influenced by discursive formations, which are people's culture.
If all people are connected with the others, they are influenced by them and by society, so authors do not exist, because everything is born from something other (intertextuality in literature).
Moreover people expresses how they are with language.
So Robyn is the Postmodernism character but also a Postmodernism thinker: she is characterized in the novel with Postmodernism style (categories...) and she thinks like a real Postmodernism writer or thinker (self concept, reflection about the old character linked to Capitalism, people subjection to discursive formations).
