The prologue function is to introduce the main topic of the novel or present the background.

In this novel the prologue function is to link the three main character: Mrs. Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway and Mrs. Brown and to introduce the reader to the context.

The prologue provides an idea for understand the novel through the presentation of Virginia Woolf character in the previous moment of her suicide. This fact is connected to the stories of the three women described in the book and asked the reader to imagine that setting and topic wont be something happy.
