TITLE:

MODERN: refers to the protagonist, refers to a middle age person

POST – MODERN: representative and allusive to a an abstract concept

 

STRUCTURE:

MODERN: organized into chapters that follow a logical order
POST – MODERN: chapter does not necesarilly follow logical order, they could be linked by contents

 

LAYOUT:

MODERN: common layout of the novel

POST – MODERN: usually it have the common layout as modern novel

 

SETTING, space:

MODERN: space is not so important; it could be figurative;

POST – MODERN: usually it is figurative, or, sometimes it is mental space

 

SETTING, time:

MODERN: there are three kind of time that coexist: 1.chronological time; 2.Inner time;3.phylosophycal time. Time of narration alternate between this three kind of time, depending on narrative strategies

POST – MODERN: it is similar to modern concept of time, but in post – modern narrative dominates consciousness time

 

STORYLINE:

MODERN: it deals with life (or a part of life) of the protagonist

POSTMODERN: there could be more character and different stories connected by some common elements

 

PLOT:

MODERN: it does not have the function to create expectation or suspence; on the other hand it has the function to put in better focus the reflection of protagonist, and how its mindset change during the novel

POST – MODERN: it is not organized in a precise way, as in Calvino’s novel there could be a frame story with a simple plot, in order to emphasize the reflection on characters’ psychology

 

NARRATIVE STRATEGIES:

MODERN: there is usually a third person omniscient intrusive narrator; there could be the eclipse of narrator; We could find the shift of the point of view;and last but not least, the stream of consciunsness or interior monologue’s strategy.

POST – MODERN: They usually coincide with modern narrative strategies

 

USE of LANGUAGE:

MODERN: as in Virginia Woolf’s novel it is used poetical language, full of rhetorical images

POST – MODERN: language is easier then in modern novel

 

THEMES:

MODERN: inner self, interior quarrel, social mores, dissatisfaction of everyday life, love

POST - MODERN: loss of values, informatic revolution, loss of boundaries, and also modern themes
