What is Postmodernism?

Postmodernism is a cultural movement wich developed as a reaction to Modernism. While Modernism is still concerned with a metaphisical aim and still believes to find one fondamental truth, Postmodernism thoughts there is not a unique trut, it doesn't even believe that exist truth.

In Postmodernism there is a break with 19^th century realism because it wanted to describe truth and believed in its existence.

Postmodernism is concerned with the development of Globalization which was speed up by the advent of technology. Furthermore culture became more easy to access because while Modernism distinguished low art from high art, Postmodernism did not.

What makes The Hours a postmodernist novel?

A for Postmodernism there is no lienear sequencing of events.

How are events arranged? What is the structuring process?

The novel has no chronological order, the structuring process follow the lifes of the three female character: Clarissa Vaughan who lives in New York at the end of the 20^th century, Laura Brown who lives in Los Angeles in 1949 and Mrs Woolf who lives in Richmond, a suburb of London in 1923.

Michael Cunningham did not adopt a chronological linear sequencing of events because consciousness could not be conceived in chronological terms.
