Arts produce, generate emotions, pleasure, positive or negative reactions. Literary, painting, sculpture and music are all forms of art, but they have many differences. Literature is made up of words, painting is made up of colours, sculpture of marble. Each form of art uses different ingredients and tools.
Whenever poets write, they must follow a strict disciplined technique so their language (the language they use) is charged with a lot of meanings and that is why poetry arouses and stirs (to evoke a felling or response) several emotions.
Literary products send a lot of messages but not always are they the same for all people. They may be all correct because every reader provides a personal interpretation of the text (even if interpretation is not free).
In order to advance an interpretation, we must be able to advance an interpretation supported by textual references.
Literary genres are: poetry, fiction and drama. The sonnet, the ballad, the novel, the haiku are literary forms.

WHAT LITERATURE IS IN MY OPINION
I think literature is a form of art like music, painting, sculpture, because, as happens in each of these works literature can provide emotions, happiness, fear, grief. So the writer is an artist, one who uses words to express and share his thoughts and feelings, in spite of using colours and paintbrushes, instruments and notes, chisels and marble.
This is one of the main aspects of literature. The writer acquaints us through his works with his thoughts. In this way we learn new things or think over what we already know.
In a literary text, the language used is not the practical one. Each word has its importance and the writer chooses it carefully. He uses it with some techniques, making rhymes, similes, figures of speech. By the use of the figures of speech, the text gets a particular musicality. This makes the reading so pleasant. It is as if you listened to a song, words make a lasting impression in your mind and follow you during the whole day, sometimes during the whole life.
Each word hides many meanings and arouses different emotions. This is its beauty. Even if I analyzed and studied a text ten times, I could find always new interpretations and feel new emotions. What I like most is that every of the emotions felt is not "wrong", it cannot be contested. On the contrary, the text acquires new nuances through new emotions.
Moreover this magic does not disappear in time. Texts which were written many centuries ago, are still full of new meanings, arouse new emotions. A famous example is the Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri. The books written about it are countless, as are innumerable its possible interpretations. Furthermore this text gained a great importance and has become one of the symbols of our country. This is only one of many examples where literature overcame intellectuals and readers's reacrtions to become the symbol of a bigger group of people.
The magic and strength hiding behind word choice create the meaning and energy of literature.
