Girando e girando in una spirale che si allarga…

Il giornale di oggi è pieno zeppo di notizie: pagine e pagine sulla carestia

in Somalia, sulle guerre dei Balcani, sugli omosessuali nell’esercito. Un anno fa, alla stessa data;

solo una sulle 365 storie prime in classifica dell’anno sono accadute. Il giornale Time riassume una

decade in una magra retrospettiva. A malapena succedeva un secolo fa

di riempire un sotto-capitolo di un libro di scuola superiore. 500 anni fa, una

o due cose succedevano ogni 50 anni. 5000 anni fa

una città era fondata, il grano coltivato, una civiltà rovesciata ogni

altro secolo. Ancora più lontano, gli anni marciavano in

gruppi come neolaureati in una grande università statale: 10.000

a 20.000 a.C; 50.000-100.000 a.C.; 1-10 milioni a.C.

Prima di ciò, le cose accadevano una volta all’Era: mam-

miferi nel Cenozoico, dinosauri nel Meso-

zoico, foreste nel Paleozoico, Protozoi nel

pre-cambriano. Al di sotto di questo, alla

vera base della contorta spirale del tempo, la sua

cornucopia, la sua tromba a corno d’a-

riete, il suo tornado che insegue attraverso

l’eternità, venne ciò che i Cris-

tiani chiamano Creazione, gli astro-

fisici chiamano il Big

Bang. Poi, per tri-

lioni di anni, proprio

niente.

CONTENT OF THE POEM

The poem tells the reader about the relationship between time and history. It opens with an isolated line, which highlights the concept of eternity of time. After that, it proceeds stating the poet’s astonishment about the quantity of news that occur today compared with the ones which happened in the past. However, news are even not considered as in the previous ages; people is more indifferent and distant to them. Despite their amount, they are compressed in few lines, in small retrospectives. Then, the poem underlines again the rarity of important events in the past. Finally, it concludes affirming that everything, compared to the origin of universe, is insignificant.

The spiral shape of the poem recalls both the spiral of time and the spiral of the events, whose bases is the Big Bang/Creation. Thus it wants to sum up history, using also visual references.

The poem may also mean that today the quantity is preferred to quality. Indeed, today events are frequent, but less influent; the graduates too are numerous, but for the same reason they have less prestige. The poet exploits also figures, to communicate both the idea of quantity and the idea of time.
