She is thoughtful and she is worried about her life.
-The passage mixes two different time dimensions. Which are they? What sound evokes the past in Clarissa’s mind? Sideline with different colours the parts dealing with the two dimensions.
The two different time dimensions are Clarissa’s past and present.
The past evokes nostalgia and she thinks about the memories of her past because she understands it is gone.
-Who do you think is Peter Walsh? What does Clarissa say of him?
I think Peter Walsh is a man who had an important role in Clarissa’s life. Clarissa says about him that she remembers the eyes of Peter Walsh, his pocket-knife, his smile, his bad temper and other thing which are vanished.
-What does Scrope Purvis think of Clarissa?
Scrope Purvis thinks she is a charming woman.

While Clarissa is walking, she is positive but she thinks that humans are fools because they create leaden circles that dissolve in the air, also she thinks about the things of London that she loves.
-Focus on point of view. What kind of narrator is used?
The narrator is first person one, omniscient, reliable, coinciding with main character, intrusive.
-Focus on the style. Critics have often used the term “poetic prose” with reference to Woolf’s style which features an abundance of repetitions, similes, imagery, lists and alliterations. Find at least one or two examples of each.
The examples of “poetic prose” are: “…a touch of the bird about her, of the jay, blue-green, light, vivacious, though she was over fifty, and grown very white since her illness.”
“…In people’s eyes, in the swing, tramp, and trudge…..sandwich men shuffling and swinging”.
-Focus on character. How is Clarissa’s character created? Through (more than one answer is possible): physical descriptions, dialogue, statements by the author, Clarissa’s thoughts and feelings, Clarissa’s behavior, the writer use of imagery and symbols.
Clarissa is over fifty, her skins is very white since her illness. There is a dialogue between Clarissa and Peter Walsh in the memories of the Clarissa’s past. The statements of the author are expressed by novel’s characters. Clarissa thoughts and feelings are illustrated by similes, metaphors or imagery.
-Where does Clarissa’s stream of thoughts start? How different is Virginia Woolf’s technique, also called “interior monologue”, from Joyce’s “stream of consciousness”?
Clarissa’s stream of thought starts to the memories about her life when she was young.
Virginia Woolf’s technique is different to Joyce one because she didn’t explain directly her thoughts but she uses some linguistics medium. Monologue interior is the character that speaks with herself, diffently stream of consciousness aren’t analysis but just a mix of thoughts.
