The text, an extract taken from David Lodge's Post-Modernism novel "Nice Work", deals about Robyn Penrose, a teacher at one University, and her ideas around literature, culture, capitalism. More, over she illustrates how the concept of the self is not valid now, because the ancient concept of character, created by Realistic novelist, which knew all its potentialities and possibilities, is not possible to accept. According to that, character is something abstract .
In addiction Robyn says that novel is capitalist, in which novelists are business men, who express middle class's ideas and needs.
Another important consideration is Robyn's rejection of concept of unique identity, referring to the evolutions of thought brought from Modernism before, and Post Modernism now.
So a work cannot be created, and It is only production, according to materialism semiotic. That is to say the idea of an author doesn't exist. Furthermore, a text is the production of intertextuality made by quotations, links and so on. After that Robyn explains the philosophy of material semiotic: you may not affirm your identity as you desire as your interlocutor may not understand the message you communicate to him.
