In the opening chapter of the novel the novelist introduces two important characters: Mrs. Dalloway and Peter Walsh. In order to demonstrate a relationship between them, Virginia Woolf introduces the character of Peter Walsh through Mrs. Dalloway's memories. He were in love with her when they was eighteen but they did not get married. Now, when their are in fifties, she remembers him and their dialogue. Also, she remembers a lot of other things, for example "...his eyes, his pocket knife, his smile..."; or simply, all about him. So, in that way the reader understands that Mrs. Dalloway was still interested in him, not maybe anymore as her lover, but probably as the man. Their relationship is still strong because, although he went to the India, they were in contact all the time. From the dialogue she remembered, the reader can see that in the youth their relationship was very strong, that they were very close.
