In the first paragraphs of Michael Cunningam's  The Hours and Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway there are many similarities and differences. Firstly in both paragraphs the reader can realize that there are a third person and omniscient narrator, but in Cunnigam's novel  it is more evident because the narrator give a judgment about character, commenting their actions. Secondly there is a different effect on the reader because in Cunningam's novel are used simple present  forms which gives concreteness and stability to the speech, while in Woolf's Mrs Dalloway  are used  past forms. Finally in both paragraphs the reader can also understand social status, daily occupation, social background and nature of the mainly character but in Cunningam's novel there is absent of authority because everything is more banal, indeed  to clean the house in Cunningam's novel there is Sally that cleaning the bathroom, while in Woolf's Mrs Dalloway  Rumpelmayer's men were coming to taken off the doors by their hinges.
