The text is an extract form the modernist novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and it what happens during the party after the Bradshaws's arrival and the mention of Septimus's suicide. The narrator analyses Clarissa's reaction to the news.
In the first sequence the narrator explains Clarissa's reaction to the Septimus's suicide. First, she is annoyed because it spoils her party, but in the second moment she imagines his death. Through the interior monologue used by the novelist, the reader is able to see her feeling, her thoughts and deduce form this that she is very sensitive person.
In the second sequence the reader is feeling what crosses her mind but also what happens in the party, because there is represented both the inner and the external reality. Also the novelist analyses Clarissa's vision of death as the sign to interpret, as attempt to communicate something. Because the person feels lonely when it cannot communicate with other. And this can be linked with quotation from Shakespeare's Othello pronounced by Clarissa because the happiness gives sense to our lifes, but also the unhappiness can bring to the refusal of the life.
In the fourth paragraph is present her view of Sir. Bradshaw, Septimus's doctor. She consider him a great doctor but also owner of some strange forces that can force people's souls.The end of the paragraph opens new sequence about life. She compare the life to the terror, to the difficulty and the reader understands that her life is struggled by fear but she is going on living because she has her husband as support. But Septimus could not tolerate the life anymore.
In the sixth paragraph the narrator represents Clarissa as the center of contrast between her social life and the world outside, because her life might seem easy and succesfull if compared to the death suffering of other people.
In the seventh paragraph she experiences a moment of being, moment when the person can see some real thing behind appearance and she remembers her youth in Bourton and happiness in the simple daily actions.
The function of last sequence is to demonstrate Clarissa's real life and her situation while she is watching the old lady. The reader understand that Clarissa sees future in the lady, the future in loneliness when she will not be able to communicate and she will be alone with her feelings. And her thoughts about Septimus's suicide in some way helps her to accept her life.
The narrator is third person omniscient narrator, reliable and not intrusive. It does not always coincides with main character but uses the shift of points of view. The style she uses is a poetic prose becuse it contains many elements of poetry as repetitions, similies, alliterations etc.
