Learning Paths » 5A Interacting
The extract "What an Extraordinary Night" from the novel "Mrs Dalloway" written by Virginia Wolf is organized into seven paragraphs. The novel "Mrs Dalloway" is placed only in one day, and the plot is reduced to the minimum. In the first paragraph the writer introduces the situation and thoughts of Clarissa about what they guests are talking about. They are talking about Septimus's death. In this first sequence the most important topic is how the characters live and react to life. The first reaction the narrator focuses on, it isn't the emotional reaction, but on the way Clarissa's body reacts. Clarissa imagines Septimus throwing himself to the window, this makes her reflect on life and death. In fact in the second paragraph deals with the death, what Clarissa thinks about, in fact she thinks that death is an open disobedience or resistance, it was an attempt to communicate. The third paragraph is made up of three lines, in which Virginia Wolf quotes some lines of Othello of Shakespeare to underline Clarissa's thoughts and moods.
The second sequence begins with the fourth paragraph, which is a description of one of Clarissa's guest, Sir Bradshaw, a great doctor, with a obscure side, with a impressing power. He was the doctor of Septimus, and Clarissa is afraid about how Sir Bradshaw have treated Septimus.
the third sequence consists on the parallel and the contrast between Clarissa and Septimus. They both don't find a sense to their life, and they understand that their lives are not how they had expected, but if Clarissa faces life thanks to her husband, even with fears, while Septimus decides to commit suicide. Life is perceived as a profound darkness, the matter is to face the real problem of living, we must find a sense even with fears. The last three paragraph deal with the sense of life, and how Clarissa realizes that her way of living wasn't how she wanted. And watching the old lady she realizes that she is not living her life.
This extract is an interior monologue, there is a third person narrator, and makes the reader visualize the scene of Septimus's suicide. Virginia Wolf uses quotation from Shakespeare, in order to underline Clarissa's thoughts and moods. There is the use of sensitive language and impression, in this way the reader can see or feel the scene, this adds reality to the story. Virginia Wolf uses onomatopoeic sounds like "thud", a large use of repetition which brings a poetical effect, and also an anaphoric structure.
• Trendy : morte iscritta
