Up to  5 A - Modernist Fiction: V. Woolf and J. JoyceUp to task document list

1)What is missing in conventional novels?

Conventional novels more often miss than succeed in achieving the thing peaple seek.

2)How does Virginia Woolf describe life?

She describes life as a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end.

3)What does Woolf mean by “the life of Monday or Tuesday”?

In my opinion it relates to everyday life.

4)What is the task of the novelist and how should fiction be written?

The task of the novelist is to convey the varying, the unknown and uncircumscribed spirit.

5)Can you see any similarity between Woolf’s ideas about fiction and Monet’s Impressionist painting?

The element that brings together fiction and Monet’s Impressionist painting is certainly the vagueness: in the first lines of the extract, Virginia Woolf mentions the fact that form of fiction in vogue in her time does not allow readers to find what they seek. Likewise the painting by Monet is without boundaries and shaded, you can not even distinguish the sea from the sky.
