VIRGINIA WOOLF'S LIFE

Virginia Woolf was born in London in 1882. Member of a large, talented family, she educated herself in her father's library. After her father's death, she moved with her sister and two brothers to Bloomsbury (a district of London). There they founded the "Bloomsbury group" which included many important cultural figures. When her sister got married, Virginia Woolf and he brother bought a new house in Bloomsbury, where they spent their time organizing gatherings where the conversation sparkled.

Beside culture and intelligence, the sexual life of Bloomsbury provided material of discussion: Virginia was bisexual and after marring the essayist Leonard Woolf, she fell in love with Vita Sackville-West (wife of Harold Nicolson).

Although her relationship with the woman, Virginia found in her husband a supportive figure. Together with him, she founded the Hogarth Press, which published some of the most interesting pieces of literature of the time, such as Eliot's Poems and the English translations of Freud.

In 1941 Woolf committed suicide. Such action was probably result of her fear of World War II and her dread of losing her mind. The woman had been frequently subject to periods of profound depression.
