NICE WORK – analysis of the extract
The extract is taken from the post-modern novel Nice Work by David Ledge.
It was published in 1982.
The function of the extract is the introduction of a new character: Robyn Penrose.
Right from the start the intelligent reader understand that the characterization is a pretest for the narrator (a third person, omniscient intrusive narrator ) to express all the most relevant principals of Post Modernist thought.
The character is introduced in contrast and in opposition to Vic Wilcox (cit. “a very different character”) with the aim to crate curiosity about that character.
The narrator informs the reader that Robyn does not believe in the concept of the character. The narrator presents the character throw the thought and the vision of the world.
The writer gives a new character throw the first name he catch the attention of the reader because a female character has got a male name (Robyn); at the same time the name carries a symbolical association with it, the man who steals to rich people to help the poor.
Furthermore the narrator explains what’s Robyn’s idea about the novel character of capitalism.
