Arnold Toynbee's essay deals with THE CHIEF FEATURES OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION. It opens with an introduction were the revolution is defined as an Hystorical Process. Also its economic and socia consequenses are illustrated at a global level. The essaist goes on with developing an argumentation in order to explain the radical change brought by Industrial Revolution. He explains the substitution of competition " for the medieva regulations which had previously controlled the production and distribution of wealth". The consequenses of this process meant the birth of two different system of thought economic science, and socialism.T he third section deals with the facts of the Industrial Revolution, the consequences and provides numerical data of the revolution, showing the growth of the population. The fourth paragraph deals with why the revolution was possible in that period, showing the growth of the manufacturing industries and the agrarian revolution. These facts lead to a decrease in rural population, whose causes are due to enclosures destruction and to the system of cultivation of the common fields. The fifth paragraph implies the agricultural advances, caused by many scientific approaches, like extension of arable cultivation, fields and open societies agricultural. the sixth and seventh paragraphs about the growth of the industry, caused by mechanical inventions in the textile industry, like spinning-jenny invented by Hargreaves in 1770, the water frame invented by Wright in 1771, the Crampton's mules in 1779, and the self-acting mule invented in 1792 by Kelly. The most important inventions in the industry are the steam engine and the cotton mill. For the mechanical revolution of iron industry we have the birth of power loom and factory systems. No less important are the invention of Means of communication, like roads and railroads canal system. All these innovations have produced two results, the expansion of way of communication and substitution of the factory system for domestic systems. The eighth section shows the industrial revolution in the effects to the distribution of wealth. social life changes for the following reasons, rental of lent, farms, enclosures system and high price of corn. The ninth section shows the social changes in manufacturing world class that became a single character and their completely change. These developments lead to consequences for people as demoralized, increased disease, and class conflict. the last paragraph, the tenth, is the conclusion of argumentative text Toynbee, which highlights the misery of working people often caused by restriction of legislation, restriction of combinations and well being.
