VIRGINIA WOOLF’S LIFE
Virginia Woolf was born in London in 1882, daughter of Leslie Stephen and Julia Prinsep-Stephen.
Her father was a relevant scholar and philosopher and he grew up his children in an environment filled with the Victorian literary influence so Virginia met many eminent writers; her family provided to give her a good education.
In 1895 Virginia’s mother died and nine years later, when she missed her father, she moved with her sister and two brothers in Bloomsbury. Here Virginia and her sister Vanessa founded the intellectual circle named “Bloomsbury Group”. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf but she was herself bisexual and she fell in love with many women. Her love stories influenced much of her literary productivity.
In 1913 she fell into depression and her husband suggested the idea of founding a publishing venture to help Virginia to get herself well again. So in 1917 they founded together the Hogarth Press.
During the period of World War II Virginia’s depression was pressing and her fear to lose her mind became a burden on her husband. In March 1941 she committed suicide.
