This is an extract taken from Mrs. Dalloway, one of the most famous novel by Virginia Woolf published in 1925. It’s a modernist novel ; this is a third person omniscient narrator, the novelist knows everything by the character.

In the extract there’s a woman, the protagonist, that she’s going to give a party in the evening and she’s going to buy flowers for the party. She goes out of her house, the reader can follow her walk and her thoughts. It’s a nice morning in June.

The extract is arrange into four sequences. In the first, the novelist introduces the protagonist Mrs. Dalloway, by her actions and then by her name. Right from the start the intelligent reader understand that she’s a married woman. It’s a particular day in her life, when she’s going to give a party in the evening.

Moreover, the author introduces her referring to her social status,she has got a servant and she can pay men to doing works : she is an aristocratic woman.

In the second paragraph, the novelist records Mrs. Dalloway thoughts while she’s walking along the street: she thinks about Peter Walsh.

In the third paragraph, the reader can see Mrs. Dalloway in a different  point of view, and he can know where she live. There is an external point of view of Mrs Dalloway, it’s Scrope Purvis’ thought. He thinjs that she is a charming woman even if she grown hair.

In the last paragraph Virginia Woolf reflects about her life,and she doesn’t found a point of contact between her consciousness and the external time.
