NARRATIVE TECHNIQUES
The short story focuses on the continuous alternation between the time of past and present. Lots of space is reserved for the girl's thoughts, which take place freely, juxtaposing memories of the past, hopes for the future, reflections on the present.
Joyce uses, in fact, very specific narrative techniques as the technique of the Epiphany, the stream of consciousness and interior monologue.
The epiphany is a narrative technique that presents itself as a sudden revelation, a sudden on lighting, from the greekepiphaneia, event. The stream of consciousness is an analog technique that writes down the sequence of thoughts and feelings of the characters without following the regular syntactic organization and mixing different languages and registers. The techniques of stream of consciousness include flashbacks, the use of similes and metaphors and a particular punctuation. The syntax is simple, linear, with short periods to reflect precisely the sequence of chaotic thoughts.
