Eveline Sequences Analysis

 

The short story can be divide in sequences to best analysing it.

 

 

In the 1st sequence the function is described the setting in which Eveline is and aroused the reader to think about Eveline's thoughts while she is watching outside the window.

 

 

In the 2nd sequence the function is to inform the reader about Eveline's life in the present "now she was going to go away...to leave her home". At the same time through the technique called stream of consciousness the reader can know particularly events of Eveline's life (her mother's death and the different behaviour of her father to when she was child from now) and in this way he can start to formulate some ideas about the character.

 

 

In the 3rd sequence, through the stream of consciousness, the reader can fells himself in Eveline's mind to best understand her melancholic feeling and emotion.

 

 

In the 4th sequence the function is to bring the reader to best comprehend Eveline's inner doubts about her decision to close her old life.

 

 

In the 5th sequence the function is to inform the reader why and with who Eveline was going to leave. These new element feed the curiosity in the reader's mind.

 

 

In the 6th sequence Eveline recalls in her mind the positive aspect and memories of her father, this narrator's choice has the function to emphasize in reader's mind the contrast presented in the character's mind and her indecision.

 

 

The ending sequence, the seventh, is setting in the reality at the moment of leaving. It has the function to show what decision takes Eveline in the end and then to invite reader to have some reflections about what he read.
