The essay Eveline, written by James Joyce is composed of 9 paragraphs.
First paragraph introduces the setting and threating atmosphere in which the protagonist lives. The writer opposes the interior setting to the outside. Eveline is inactive, unable to act differently to other people that are busy in everything.
Second paragraph is about the time that goes on and everything changes.The different situations and setting in which people live are changeable and it is a conseguence of events or choice of person. The first part of the paragraph is characterized of onomatopoeic verbs and this gives the sense of movement and concrete actions. Second part contains memories and habits .
Third paragraph describes the life of Eveline, her memories, the relation to some old objects and the emotions that provoke in her.
Fourth paragraph illustrates the Eveline’s life, her routine and job. Eveline is thinking about a new life, in a new country and the possible consequences on her. This aspects underlines the fear for a different life and for changes.
Fifth paragraph is about the relationship between Eveline and Frank. The writer illustres their meeting and the things their do together.
Sixth paragraph explains the memories about Eveline’s father and the two letter she sends to father and Harry, a friend. She is always linked to her memories and past life, she is always inactive.
In seventh paragraph the writer explains that in the meantime Eveline is thinking the time passes and she shows her inactivity, she is paralyzed.
Eighth paragraph is about Franks action to save Eveline to her fears and the terror to face the life.
Ninth paragraph is expresses the indecision of Eveline, her fear for external world, for the changes and the new possibility of life.
All paragraphs are in relation because the omniscient narrator tells the thought of Eveline and in this way it is possible to understand the setting and the characterization of Eveline.
The verbs are simple past because they convey in a better way the inactivity, the importance of past in Eveline’s life and the fear for the future or the choice of life.
The sequences are related because there are memories that explains the way of thinking of the protagonist and writer.
