THE ROMANS
Britain was invaded by the Romans in the first time in 55 BC by Julius Cesar, but was not conquered. The Romans conquered Britain in 43 AD with Emperor Claudius. The lowland zone of Britain became Romanised.
The Romans brought their culture and language with them. They built new towns and connected them with roads. There were three different kinds of towns: the coloniae (peopled by Roman settlers), the municipia (inhabitants with Roman citizenship) and civitates (the old Celtic tribes).
Emperor Hadrian ordered to built a wall to define a line between the conquered Britons and the Scots and Picts.
Roman control of Britain came to an end as soldiers were withdrawn to defend Rome against the Barbarians raiders. The Romano-British were left alone to fight against the Scots, the Irish and Anglo-Saxons from Germany.
