Tenses Analysis

The tenses used Eveline’s short story are
-    Simple past tense: it’s used to talk about Eveline’ the moment she’s living.  Simple past expresses convictions, actions surely happened (e.g. “few people passed”,  “She was tired”, “Through the wide doors of the shed she caught..”)
-    Past Perfect tense:  is used to refer to a very distant past and it appears when Eveline thinks to her past experiences, when she remembers her childhood. It’s the tense of tales and Eveline idealizes that age as it was a tale.
-    Conditional tense: implied when Eveline imagines her future (what will happen in Dublin or what will happen to her in Buenos Aires). It express her doubtful state of mind and her irresolution about the choice she had to make.
-    Past progressive: is used to express Eveline’s aims and intention that she will not realize.
