The text is an extract from Virginia woolf's "The Commmon Reader".
In this extract, Virginia Woolf wants to express her opinion about the way a novelist should write a novel. The text is divided in two sequences. In the first one Virginia Woolf criticizes traditional novels because they don't express life and they only deals with the plot, whit commedy and tragedy but they don't deals with the sens of life. Every traditional novelist follow these themes and like Virginia Woolf says:"they are constrained by some powerful and unscrupulous tyrant".
In the second sequence, Virginia Woolf expresses her concept of sense of life : "it isn't a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged" (regular process of events) but it is "a luminous halo" (a set of feelings perception), therefore modern novelist deals with character's feelings, using new techniques:the shift of the point of view, the stream of consciousness and the interior monologue.
