ANALYSIS OF EVELINE
Right from the start of the short story Eveline does not express her intentions to go away. The first time the narrator communicates her idea to leave home is at the end of the second sequence.
Eveline reminds her childhood and the way she expresses her memories makes the intelligent reader understand that reality does not return her any motivation to go on living and also that past makes her feel better. In the second sequence of the extract the proposition: "everything changes" is essential to understand Eveline's attitude. She is not able to make decisions, she has not got a point of reference in her life. She is afraid of future and only habits make her feel home.
In the following sequence Eveline thinks about her work and she images what her colleagues would think. She also makes the intelligent reader understand that she would not be desperate to leave the stores.
Eveline analyses all the aspects of her life and the idea to leave home changes her opinion about her shabby life that appears like a no wholly undesirable life.
In addiction the quarrel between her father and Frank forces Eveline to meet her lover secretly. This is a very important aspect because Eveline must escape from her family secretly.
To conclude Eveline reminds her promise to her died mother to keep the home together as long as she could. In the last sequence of the extract she seems to be a little bit more secure: she must escape to be happy because she has a right to happiness like everyone in the world. But at the end she does not follow Frank, she remains passive and the comparison with a helpless animal highlights her inability to decide and to take her own responsibilities.
