JAMES JOYCE, Ulysses

A first approach with the extract Penelope:

Characters:  A stingy woman who’s looking for the perfection and thinking about her lover. Then the lover evocated by the woman’s thought (the reader can make an idea with his actions).

Setting:

a)    Time : the verbs’ tenses are in the present so the woman is now thinking. The verbs in the past are used for memories

bPlace : She is probably in a room because she deal with alarm clock, getting up early and flowers to put there

Narrator: first person narrator who adopts the character’s point of view, reporting her feelings and thoughts

Narrative techniques: Stream of consciousness given by the free indirect speech. All the thoughts are written as they’d come in the character’s mind so the reader has to find the link between them. Then, there’s no punctuation so the reader is even more free.
