This extract is taken from the final part of Joyce's Ulysses. The Joyce's Ulysses is modelled on Homer's Odyssey, and it's one of the most important modernist novel. It was first published on 2nd February 1922.
In this extract the protagonist is Molly, Leopold Bloom's wife, who gets up very early. She suddenly think that in China at this time the people are preparing themselves to the day. After that she see the pattern of the wallpaper in the room, and from the image of flowers she became to think, in ad associative way. Joyce use the stream of consciousness narrative technique, besides he doesn't use punctuations mark. In this way the reader can understand exactly what Molly think, and all her mental associations.
The set is an inner setting, the character is closed in a room, lying on the bed. The room is not described by the narrator because he gives importance only to Molly's thoughts. We can only know that on the wall there's a wallpaper with flowers. From this particular detail we can understand that Molly is a middle status woman: in that time only rich people had the possibility to have the wallpaper.
The intelligent reader can understand that Molly is not a common housewife. She is a sensual woman, she gives much importance to her appearance. Infact she think what wear when her husband will take his son to home, to be attractive. In addiction Molly is also very sensitive. She like nature and flowers, its good perfumes and beautiful colors.
In the end of the extract Molly, while lying awake in bed, thinking of her past and present life.
