This extract is taken from Ulysses by James Joyce. It is the very end of the novel written from 1914 to 1921.
The novel, which takes place in a single day (June 16, 1904) and is set in Dublin, is articulated in order to trace in the Odyssey of Homer. Each chapter corresponds to a song of the Odyssey, and is written using each time a different narrative technique. The first 3 chapters correspond to the Telemachia, the 12 following to the wanderings of Odysseus, the last 3 to return to Ithaca. For each chapter, but not always, are associated with an organ, an art, a colour and a literary technique.
This extract represent the last episode of the novel, titled "Penelope", and is wholly taken up by Molly Bloom's soliloquy.
This episode portrays Molly's stream of consciousness while she is lying awake in bed thinking of her past and present life.
The thoughts and impressions of Molly are presented as well as emerge in her mind.
She woke up and thought about other type-days. She intend to buy some flowers because an her husband friend is coming the day after.
She remembered also how beautiful was nature when his husband asked her to marry him. She remembered that moment.
The author never intervenes to explain, comment on and sort it, thus achieving maximum objectivity. Thoughts either do not follow a chronological order, from the present to the immediate future to specific episodes of the past, or a cause - effect order.
The most noticeable features of the monologue are: the lack of punctuation and logical connections, the use of first person, the recurrence of certain words and images.
