The history of Venice as home of the glassmaking is a particulary rich one. Since the 15th century, the name of the Venetian island, Murano, has been virtually synonymous with the finest and most elegant glass. The origins of the glassmaking in the Venetian lagoon go back to the Roman manufacturing tradition on the nearby mainland, while the first archeological evidence of the glass production in Venice itself comes from the island of Torcello and is from the 7th cenutry. From an early date the Republic organised its glass trade in a conscious effort to achieve a world wide renown. Glassmakers were already subject to strict controls in the 12th century. The famous Capitulare de Fiolaris, which appeared in 1271, contains the rules and regulations for all those involved in the industry, including furnace owners and childern working as apprentices.
