Reading of the "Se una mattina d'estate un bambino" by Roberto Cotroneo.

Analysis of  The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S.Eliot.

The title: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. It can be considered innovative because it is different from the traditional poetry titles (A Silvia, I Sepolcri etc)

Epigraph: It is taken from Dante's Inferno, Canto XXVII, lines 61-66 and it present the aim of the poem because the character who pronuonced these words (Guido da Montefeltro) and the protagonist of the song are very alike. Both Guido and John Alfred cannot reveal some things in their life and while Guido reveals it after his death because his words will not come out from the hell, J. Alfred tells them to his conscience and not to the other people (conscience is typical theme of Modernism and it is also in the center of the poem).

The poem is about the man who had to do something but he does not do it (concept of paralysis present in Joyce) because he is afraid of consequences.

I stanza: There is contrast between the first line "Let us go then, you and I" that seems to introduce something pleasant and the rest of stanza that presents an etherized patient, half-deserted streets, solitary places.

Refrain: It represents the vulgarity of the society we live in because prostitute, women that have not got any morale talk about Michelangello, one of the greatest artists.

II stanza: There is presented ambient in autumn or winter. The reader can see that John Alfred is afraid of external world because he prefer safe and closed ambient to the external world.

III stanza: In the 3rd stanza the poet presents paralysis of John Alfred because he is postponing everyday his action, he does not decide but he says : "there will be time". The reader can see how is difficult for him to make any decision, also for a very simple things: "before the taking of a toast and tea"(everyday ritual) that present reveal of his love for one woman. Also this requires "...time yet for a hundred indecisions, and for a hundred visions and revisions"(concept of quest in Modernism).

Refrain.

Stanza IV: There is present again his indecision, and his asking if he can do it, but all finishes on this, he does not take any decision, instead of that he tries " to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet" because other people see only our outward side.
