-How many sequences are there in Eveline?
In Eveline there are ten sequences. the 1St from line 1 to 3, the 2nd from line 4 to 21, the 3rd from line 22 to 33, the 4th from line 34 to 43, the 5th from line 44 to 72, the 6th from line 73 to 99, the 7th from line 100 to108, the 8th from line 109 to 124, the 9th from line 125 to 129 and the 10th from line 130 to 155

 

-What's their function?
The fist sequence has the fuction to introduce the protagonist and the setting of the short story; the second one tells about Eveline's childhood; the third one underlines Eveline's attachment for her house , the fouth one highlights the doubts which afflict Eveline; the fifth one has the fuction to tell the reader Eveline's hard life; the sixth one introduces Frank; the seventh presents the kind side of Eveline's father and Eveline's moment of happyness; the eight one tells the painful death of Eveline's mother; the nineth one underlines Eveline's wish to live a happy and quiet life; the tenth sequence concludes the story.

 

-What is the relationship between the sequences ?
The sequences are linked together by associations: home, the priest who went to Melbourne - Eveline who is going to leave her home, the stores, her life - her future life, to meet secretely - darkness/evening...

 

-Narrative techniques
James Joyce uses the internal monolgue and a free indirect style because he wants the reader to feel inside Eveline's mind. Moreover he uses a direct style in order to higlight the character's words. The narrator adopted by Mr. Joyce is a third person omniscient and not intrusive narrator indeed he allows the reader to make his own personal idea.
