THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK


The poem is a dramatic monologue. It is an excellent example of modernist novel.
The speaking voice of the monologue is J. Alfred Prufrock's one. He talks wit his consciousness.
He speaks because he is sure his secret life will be always remain.
The structure of the poem reveals the juxtaposition of scenes: need of dramatic effect.
The poem is revolutionary because it doesn't follow a pattern. The scenes are kept together by refrains.
The poem displays his revolutionary aspects: it hasn't got a pattern, it is written in free verses, it is a dramatic monologue.
The speaking voice isn't the poet's voice, it is the voice of the character J. Alfred Prufrock.
J. Alfred Prufrock is together with his voice a technical device called dramatic personae: character whose voice Eliot adopted to create his innovative kind of poem.
The reader can experience something like he goes to the theatre. He is helped by structure in most traditional poetry but here feel lost.

He is an antihero and has got a perception of time throe consciousness. He is total awareness of inability. These last aspects are modernist aspects.
Hero implies God. God is dead. There is the need to make sense of proper life. J. Alfred Prufrock doesn't act.
Using language of sense and impression, Eliot uses compact and precise images, there's no nostalgia. He break of inside part of oneself.
Time of consciousness is the simultaneous one in existence. J. Alfred Prufrock is unable to fulfil his desire.
Heroes not comes to fulfil their desires and this makes them tragic.

Dramatic monologue in form of poetry born during Victorian age, first adopted by two poets: Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning.
Architects of dramatic monologue is Shakespeare monologue.
A poet who adopts dramatic personae take distance from characters. He conveys universal values.
Hamlet monologue and Macbeth soliloquy rendered tragedy awareness of people consciousness; become human beings, reveal human essence thanks fears and inability to taje decisions.
Sufferance makes people tragic and heroic.
J. Alfred Prufrock's inability to make an act of self revelation is a banal decision. It would not change the action, but he can't make it.
Sun means youth, rationality.

The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a total intertextual work.

Eliot wrote also The Presence of Tradition in Individual Talent. A innovative work of art can only come to life if it has to display the tradition of his bones.
