Up to  5 C. James Joyce's The DeadUp to task document list
The Dead is a short story that belongto the Dubliners collection of stories. People are not able to live. Example: Eveline, paralysys. She lives in a passive way. She's unable to take decisions about her feelings of love. Eveline: lives in Dublin. She has to choose if leave Dublin with her boyfriend or stay there. She is living in the past, this is a weak point. She wants to live in the past because she had maked a promise to her matter. Living in the past is more secure then living in the present = face the unknown. Interior monologue = narrative technique. The reader is direct to focus his attention to character's inner side consciousness. Joyce left Ireland with Nora, she was not his wife yet. "Eveline" is a comparison between Eveline and a helpless animal.

The dead. The most important part is the epiphany, sudden manifestation of something of his life. He saw his wife's emotional reaction in front of a song. She heard a song that remind her boyfriend when she was adulescent. Her boyfriend died for her, he left his town and he goes out to met her, but he was ill of tisys, and under the rain he died. Epiphany brings a change, he realized that his wife was moved from her memory of Michael Fury (her adulescent boyfriend). His wife is different because she's moved by her epiphany, the memory. When they're going to the hotel to consume a sexual plasure night, husband undertstood that she was not ready to pass a that kind night. The external element activates something of herself to reach the surface. During the voyage from party to hotel she thinks about her epiphany. When they have reached the hotel, she lies on the bed and the husband is in front of the window (distance between the couple). Outdoor it's snowing, and husband thinks to Michael Fury and to all dead and alive people. This makes a connection.
The following day the husband should hold a speech. When he arrivese late he justify himself: he was late because his wife has taken a lot of time to get ready. EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON HER WIFE.
