The text is taken from the essay "Tradition and the individual talent" of T.S Eliot.

T.S Eliot is the new poet: he adopted the new approach.

The essay deals with the value of tradition,in particular with the relationship between the work of the individual poet and that of the poets who wrote before him.

The extract explain Eliot's attitude of tradition, he consider the use of tradition a way to create a personal idea, not a copy act.

The novelist discusses extensive areas of literature: literary criticismo is a form of writing that discusses literature ( for example: The Common Reader).

He writes that tradition cannot be inherited and if you want it you must obtain it by great labour. He expound  the concept of tradition in two ideas: the historical sense and the principle of aesthetic.

The historical sense is indispensable, and it involves a perception.
