LESSON NOTES -7.03.12
Mr. Gabriel and his wife Gretta are the main characters. Gabriel is a man of letters and he's a point of reference for the others because he has got a good reputation. Gretta was loved by a fellow: he was seriously ill but however he decided to go out to see her and so he died.
Gabriel's aunts are old characters and symbolize classical and suffocating tradition in Ireland life.
The whole story is told from Gabriel's point of view and so we see Gretta from his perspective and we know more about her feelings than Gabriel's one. This is a way to underline Gabriel's situation, who is an anti-hero character.
The dead are Irish people, because they're paralyzed: they have a life that they can't live because they always want to do something but they are never able to do it. So the reader can understand that Joyce is criticizing Irish society.
