There are two epiphanies in The Dead and they are lived by Gabriel. The first one when he hears his aunt singing and another one when he sees his life crying. Epiphany adds meaning to the life, it is manifestation of life, it changes it.
When Gabriel sees his wife he understands that she is moved, but also that she has never been so moved and he wants to know why she was so moved. Gabriel understands in the hotel, after she told him story of Michael Furrey, that he does not love her as Michael and that his life is passive. This is in opposition to what he thought before the epiphany, he considered himself superior than others, he wanted to quote some poetry lines but he thought that people was not able to follow and understand it. He said that the people had to overcome the past, memories, he called the people to go on. At the end he understands that it is wrong, that persons like Michael Furrey rests in people's mind, so his speech betrayed him. In conclusion, epiphany makes understand characters something they did not know before. It is a revelation, illumination.
J.Joyce alse sees himself in the character of Gabriel.
Symbolic realism is a narrative technique used by J. Joyce because he wanted the reader to understand that there is a meaning beyond the surface meaning of words, e.g. Snow can represents Gabriel wish for escaping his situation, snow also washes the nature and it discovers new nature, but also something that put together all the world, the people, the dead and the living.
J.Joyce uses 3rd person omniscient narrator non intrusive, because he does not comment anything, but he tells story as if he were inside characters' consciousness, but it is not limited to the interior monologue , it recalls also surroundings.
