The history of Venice as the home of glassmaking is particularly rich one. Since the 15th century, the name of the Venetian island, Murano, has been virtually synonymous with the finest and most elegant glass.

The origins of glassmaking in the Venetian lagoon go back to the Roman manufacturing tradition on the nearby mainland, while the first archaeological evidence of a glass production in Venice itself comes from the island of Torcello and is from the 7th century. From an early date the Republic organised its glass trade in a conscious effort to achieve a worldwide renown. Glassmakers were already subject to strict controls in the 12th century. The famous Capitulare de Fiolaris, which appeared in 1271, contains rules and regulations for all those involved in industry, including furnace owners and children working as apprentices.
