This essay is written by T.S. Eliot and it is very important because it analysis how changes the way to consider what is innovative when a new work of art is published.
Obviously Eliot organized his essay in most argumentations to distinguish what are his thoughts.
First of all Eliot wants to underline that modernists’ poets try to find something to be isolated from predecessors (Victorian’s poets).
Secondly, the most important thing (this is the thesis) is that when a writer dies, his thought and his written doesn’t die because they are immortal.
In addition, he highlights that novelty is better than repetition, but in this case he doesn’t talk about repetition, but about tradition. Eliot’s thought is that tradition is something of much significance and it cannot be inherited. In fact according to Eliot a conscious writer is someone that knows his place in time, so he is contemporary.
Moreover, Eliot thinks that to give a judgment is necessary make a comparison with someone also because nobody completes his meaning alone.
Besides, when a new work arrives, it changes the order among old and new, and this change creates a conformity between all the story. This aspect is particular characterization of European and in particular English literature, that nevertheless pays attention to not alter the past, but only to direct the present, and at the same time the poet is aware to this great responsibility.
