ELIOT'S OBJECTIVE CORRELATIVE

A  new famous term
used by T.S. Eliot is an essay on Hamlet (1919). The releant passage is the only way of expressing emotion in the form of art is by
finding an objective correlative, in other
words, a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the
formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts, which
must terminate in sensory experience, are given the emotion is immediateky
evoked.

Eliot goes on to suggest that in
Lady Machbeth's sleep walking speech and in the speech that Machbeth makes when
he hears of his wife's death, the words are
completely evacuate ti the state of mind; whereas in Hamlet the prince is "dominated by a state of mind which is
inexpressible, because it is in excess of the facts as they appear".

These observations have provoked a
good deal of debate.

In other terms a successful
artistic creation requires an exsquisite balance between, and cohalecence of form and matter. If the matter
(thought, feeling, action) is "too much", ("in excess of") the form (words) we
have a discrepancy, strain, a lack of unity (that kind of discrepancy and
strain: the experience is overwelmed by the words. Colloquially we say "I was
speechless", "It was indescribable" in other words we have not found "formula".
In reverse, lacking the formula again we overdescribe, say too much.

Correlativo oggettivo: un oggetto,
una gamma di oggetti, situazioni che mi permette di comunivcare le emozioni di
un personaggio. Eliot si occupa di un'arte impersonale: una poesia non deve
essere uno sfogo di emozioni (in excess of emotions), deve essere una fuga.

The poet should be detached:
distanza emotiva che permette di vederre il mondo in modo oggettivo.

A search for impersonality: se
provo un'emozione e voglio comunicarla è difficile renderla in modo che tutti
la capiscano allo stesso modo.

WASTE LAND

Eliot inizia la sua poesia con un
verso che ricorda "The Canterbury Tales" di Chaucer, il primo che scrisse
un'opera in inglese.

Aprile: la natura si rigenera ,
una trasformazione, una rinascita: promette una rigenerazione che non verrà.
Utilizza elementi dela natura bologica e esistenziale dell'essere umano.
Nascono i lillà che vengono utilizzati per i funerali.

Pioggia: acqua fenomeno naturale
che permette la generazione, purifica del peccato.

Aprile: quello che una volta
funzionava ora non funziona più. Nell'essere umano no c'è speranza.
