The objective corelative
Definition: a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events that shall be the formula of a particular emotion and that may be used in creative writing to evoke a desired emotional response in the reader.
The objective corelative is the better way to express emotions. The term was used in Eliot'S Hamlet for the first time.
Eliot suggest that in Lady Machbeth's speech that he makes when he hears of his wife's death , THE WORDS ARE COMPLETELY ADEGUATE TO THE STATE OF MIND; whereas in Hamlet (the prince) was dominated by a state of mind wich is inexpressable because it is in excess of the facts as they appear.
These obseravtions have provoked a good deal of debate. In order terms a successful artistic creation requires AN EXQUISITE BALANCE BETWEEN COALESCENCE OF FORM AND MATTER. If the matter ( thoughts , feelings) is too much we have a discrepancy , strain, a lack of unity, they don't fadge.
