The Middle Ages 

 

Medieval literature was highly influenced by religion. The most developed literary forms where the ballads and poems where the language used was really concrete and simple for all kind of people to understand. The most important poet of the period was Geoffrey Chaucer who is also known as the Father of English literature. His most famous work nowadays is The Canterbury Tales.

 

Literature was originally an oral form which was a pastime in the courts and among the people. These literary forms usually dialed with common topics as tragic love stories, the supernatural and battles (mainly between England and Scotland). Structurally there were a lots of repetitions, incremental repetitions, assonances and alliterations. The reason why there was this repetitive rhythm is that these literary forms where mainly based on memory. They had rhymes and rhythm also because the usually were sang and together with music (ballads).
