The Dead is a short story taken from The Dubliners by James Joyce.

In the short story there is a main character, Gabriel, and a secondary character very close to him, Gretta, Gabriel's wife.

What we know about Gretta is her reaction to a song, we know she's notte approved by Gabriel's mother and she does not do what Gabriel wants. Her name has an harsh sound, she's linked to her homeland, she's wife and mother but che never speak about her marriag and her sons.

Gretta's function is to activate Gabriel's epiphany, she underlines his grouth and transformation.

What's an epiphany?

An epiphany is a moment of illumination and revelation, it comes from a religious festival calle Epiphany which celebrates the journey of the Magi.
